rsyslogd has been known to occasionally eat up 100%+ CPU on VPS platforms. If you see this happening in your VPS, try running these three commands to fix the problem:
service rsyslog stop
sed -i -e 's/^\$ModLoad imklog/#\$ModLoad imklog/g' /etc/rsyslog.conf
service rsyslog start
